Vanitas is a genre of art which uses symbolism to show the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death. The paintings contains several symbolics that remind us of the finiteness of life (flowers, skeletons, insects, etc.) and the futility of worldly pleasures (instruments, wine, books, etc.)
I chose whiskey as the main iconic object for my Vanitas still life.
For each brand of whiskey, I created a mood that I thought would be appropriate.
Then chose the secondary objects of flowers and butterflies to match the mood.

Motion
Basil Hayden changed the design of the bottle.
Until 2022, it was common to see labels in paper strips around the neck of the bottle,
but since then, labels have been in the form of torn paper.
I wanted to show both designs,
so I used a mirror to change the reflection of the bottle.

Bourbon Old Fashioned
1. Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice.
2. Stir until well chilled.
3. Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
4. Garnish with an orange peel, expressing the oils over the top of the drink and placing the peel in the glass.

Behind The Scene
Reference _____
The overall color and mood was inspired by Jean Honore Fragonard's "A Young Girl Reading."
To capture the cozy atmosphere of the painting, I used a Post effect to create a fuzziness.
I wanted to use warm colors for the mood of the painting,
so I maximized the golden objects, the orange color of the whiskey and butterfly.
However, without color contrast, the work can look bland,
so I placed a white hydrangea with a hint of green in the background
to contrast with the color of the main object for emphasis.

Making _____
I experimented with a variety of modeling, texturing, and lighting throughout this series of projects.
If there's a better way to say it, please don't hesitate to give me feedback.
Monarch Butterfly _____
I wanted to capture the unique texture of the butterfly's wings,
so I tried to emphasize the pattern that is unique to butterfly wings,
even if it's not realistic.
Basil Hayden Bottle _____
I had to search a lot of image sources to make two versions of the label.
I couldn't get quality data, so I drew or retouched label designs based on photos.
